I hold a bachelor’s degree from UCLA, a master’s degree from San Diego State University, and a PhD from UC Berkeley. I have received several national awards for my work including the Ghiselli award for research excellence from the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (1982), the Yoder-Heneman award for research from the Society for Human Resource Management (1992), the William Owens award for research from the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (2000), the Robert McDonald advancement of organizational research methodology award from the Academy of Management (2010), the Presidential Award for Science and Practice from Society of Industrial & Organizational (2019), and the Jo-Ida Hansen and John P. Campbell Career Mentoring Award from the Society of Industrial & Organizational Psychology (2025).

I am emeritus professor of Psychology/Schreyer Distinguished Honors Professor at Penn State, having served 40 years as faculty.  I developed, ran, and sold two successful consulting organizations specializing in I-O psychology: Landy, Jacobs & Associates (purchased by SHL) and EB Jacobs (purchased by PSI/Talogy).  I joined Division 14/SIOP in the mid-1970s.

Currently I work on the SIOP-DOJ/COPS task force and the selection committee for the Hansen-Cambell Career Mentoring Award.  Previously I served in numerous capacities for SIOP including as the business manager for TIP and the Horizons and Visionaries initiatives.  I also served as associate editor for the Journal of Human Performance.

My entire career has prepared me to help move SIOP forward by serving as a Member-at-Large for our wonderful professional association.
