What sparked your interest in I-O psychology?
I have always been drawn to business and analytics, while also being fascinated by human behavior and motivation—constantly asking “why” and “what if.”
After focusing on business administration in undergrad, I had planned to go straight into an MBA program but had not yet found my passion area. I was interested in sociology and psychology but did not see how it all fit together, so I chose to gain experience in my first corporate role.
A few years later, that organization conducted an employee engagement survey, which opened up a whole new world for me. I had so many questions and wanted to understand every part of it—how it worked and what would come next. I remember asking my coworkers, “Who does this? Does someone actually do this for a living?” A colleague mentioned I-O psychology, and once I looked into it, everything clicked.
That moment led me to return to graduate school and ultimately build a career in a field I genuinely love—one where my passion continues to grow over time.
What role do you see I-O psychology playing in the future of work?
Because our focus is on people at work, I-O psychology will remain essential to both organizational effectiveness and quality of work life.
As work evolves through artificial intelligence (AI), new technologies, and disruption, helping people and organizations adapt and thrive will only become more important.
What work trends are you seeing and hearing about, and how can I-O psychology practitioners, educators, and students impact these trends?
AI—without question. I have the privilege of working in a highly tech-enabled, human-centered environment, and the opportunity is incredible. I see I-O psychology playing a critical role in two ways:
- Ensuring AI is designed and used in ways that support both human well-being and sustainable business outcomes
- Helping people build the capabilities that matter most in an AI-driven world—human connection, collaboration, adaptability, and self-awareness
What advice would you give to students or those early in their careers?
Get involved early—join your local I-O psychology group, build relationships, and explore the variety of opportunities within I-O psychology.
The I-O psychology community is full of people deeply committed to making a meaningful difference at work and beyond.
What tip can you share with someone might not know how to network in the field of I-O psychology?
Focus on building genuine relationships with people across a variety of backgrounds and interests. Stay curious, keep learning, and look for opportunities to both learn from and support others.
Mentoring is a great way to do both—you will gain just as much as you give. Programs like SIOP’s EMA Subcommittee mentoring program are a great way to connect while continuing to grow.
What is one of your favorite SIOP Annual Conference memories/highlights?
Our I-O psychology department chair does an incredible job of bringing together students and alumni to explore local cuisine and culture in the host city. I will never forget my first trip to San Francisco—riding the cable cars and enjoying amazing seafood together.
Please share one non-I-O-related bit of information about yourself.
I am a bit of an adrenaline junkie—skydiving, roller coasters, and sliding down mountains. These days, though, the real thrill is juggling family schedules, cars, and getting everyone where they need to be.
