Program Description

Dr. Howard will present background information on the links between exposure to combat trauma and subsequent mental health disorders and suicide, with specific emphasis on traumatic brain injury. He will trace his research team’s efforts to understand how combat trauma shapes long-term physical and mental health outcomes, which led to investigations of suicide attempts and suicide mortality rates among post-9/11 Veterans with and without traumatic brain injury, as well as changes in suicide rates of these groups over time. He will conclude by briefly touching on current and future work in this area.

Presenter

Jeffrey Howard, PhD is a Professor of Public Health at the University of Texas at San Antonio and former Health Scientist and Epidemiologist with the U.S. Department of Defense Joint Trauma System. His research is focused on physical and mental health outcomes following exposure to trauma, with emphasis on combat trauma. Within this context, he examines how these processes operate within short-term (immediate death/survival) and long-term time scales (accelerated aging, chronic disease and premature mortality). His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, US Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Defense (DoD). He has authored and co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed research articles in top journals, including JAMA, Circulation, Hypertension, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science and Scientific Reports.
