Program Description:

Dr. Gibbs and Dr. Sherman will present their research on the role of perceived organizational structure in supporting successful employment transitions among military veterans and non-veterans. Across multiple studies, we examined whether perceiving greater organizational structure supports positive workplace outcomes among veterans and non-veterans. Drawing on Compensatory Control Theory, we proposed that structure serves as an external source of order that can restore self-efficacy and promote belonging during transitions. Findings suggest that organizational structure plays a meaningful role in successful employment transitions, particularly for those socialized in structured institutions like the military. Ongoing research and development of interventions informed by this research will be discussed.
