Program Description:
Dr. Penix-Smith will present on Service Member and Veteran engagement in psychotherapy, including the impact of clients prematurely dropping out before reaching their treatment goals. Specifically, this talk will include findings from the largest meta-analysis of premature discontinuation from psychotherapy in military populations to-date, which encompassed data from 283 published articles and 719,465 Service Members and Veterans. Strategies for reducing dropout in military populations will be reviewed, including orienting clients to what they can expect from treatment, utilizing measurement-based care, discussing the therapeutic alliance, and leveraging machine learning. Implications for therapists, researchers, policymakers, and clinic leaders will be discussed.

Presenter: Elizabeth Penix-Smith, PhD
Dr. Penix-Smith is a Research Psychologist and National Research Council Fellow at the Center for Military Psychiatry and Neurosciences at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. She obtained her doctorate in clinical psychology at Idaho State University and completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care System, where she then served as a staff psychologist. Her research centers on improving Service Member and Veteran mental health, including psychotherapy engagement, PTSD treatment, suicide prevention, and integrating artificial intelligence technologies.
