Submitted by SIOP President Scott Tannenbaum
In 1974, National Volunteer Week was established to celebrate the efforts of volunteers across the country. I want to take this opportunity to celebrate the efforts of volunteers a little closer to home—here at SIOP.
To paraphrase a quote from former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, “Without volunteers, SIOP would be an organization without a soul.”
Every year, more than 700 volunteer members serve SIOP in various ways, from reviewing SIOP Annual Conference submissions to serving on committees to reviewing award and Fellow nominations. I’m continually impressed by our volunteers’ energy and commitment to our field and society. To those who serve as volunteers, I extend my heartfelt appreciation. Without you, there is no SIOP!
To those of you who may be interested in exploring new ways to volunteer with SIOP, I encourage you to learn more on our Volunteering webpage. There you’ll find information about running for office, serving on a committee, contributing to SIOP publications, and more. Volunteering certainly benefits SIOP, but I believe you’ll also find personal value in the experience by building new relationships, expanding your network, and developing new skills.
As I end my term as SIOP president and shift into the past president role, I’d like to thank you for all you’ve done for SIOP and for what you will do in the future. I look forward to continuing to support you and feed off your energy and commitment to our profession!
