The first book from the SIOP Organizational Science, Translation, and Application Book Series translates the science and practice of I-O psychology into actionable steps for impacting sustainable development efforts using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework.

Sustainable Development Through the World of Work: Translating Insights from Organizational Psychology was edited by SIOP Fellows Julie B. Olson-Buchanan, John C. Scott, and Lori Foster.

In 2015, the United Nations established 17 SDGs to inspire focused efforts to collectively make progress toward major societal challenges. These goals have served as a rallying point to work together toward a common agenda. The United Nations identifies business partnerships and science as key factors in identifying pathways to accomplish the SDGs. I-O psychology offers tremendous promise for advancing prosocial work but, to date, has been somewhat inaccessible.

“Our new book is a powerful call to action, underscoring that sustainable development isn’t just an aspirational goal, it’s a pressing necessity that demands shared responsibility and decisive action from all of us,” Scott said.

This volume focuses on four major areas where the science of I-O psychology can be applied for prosocial purposes:

  • social and cross-cultural psychology to improve understanding
  • health and well-being
  • economics
  • environment

The volume explicitly targets those who are engaged in prosocial work across the public and private sectors.

“This book is especially helpful for those who are interested in making a bigger impact in serving the greater good,” said Olson-Buchanan. “It provides clear, evidence-based takeaways for increasing the effectiveness of your efforts to make your community a better place for all.”

Books in the SIOP Organizational Science, Translation, and Application Book Series encourage collaboration between I-O psychologists and other researchers to address phenomena related to work, working, employee health/well-being, applied measurement, and talent management.
