Planning for the preconference workshops for SIOP 2004 in Chicago is well underway! The Continuing Education and Workshop Committee has been working hard to bring you an exciting line-up of speakers and topics. With the generous input and feedback from many of you, we have prepared an exceptional set of professional development opportunities.

Some highlights:

  • Cassie Barlow, from the U.S. Air Force, and Ben Dowell, from Bristol-Myers Squibb, will walk us through talent management best practices in both the public sector and private industry.
  • Mike Beer, from Harvard University, will showcase his organizational fitness model: an integrated management approachbased on 2 decades of action research and practicethat creates alignment between the organization and its people with objectives, strategy, and principles that lead to commitment and sustain high performance.
  • Richard Boyatzis, from Case Western Reserve University will bring his insights on emotional intelligence, a topic near and dear to this distinguished author and scholar.
  • Wayne Cascio, from the University of ColoradoDenver, and Larry Fogli, from People Focus Inc., will discuss how changes in the economy and workforce demographics are affecting organizational strategies, resulting in new realities of attracting, selecting, and retaining talent.
  • Wade Gibson, from Gibson and Associates, and Keith Pyburn, from Fisher & Phillips LLP, will provide an update on recent developments in the law that influence the practice of I-O psychology.
  • Tim Judge and John Kammeyer-Mueller, both from the University of Florida, will let us in on how personality and emotions shape workplace attitudes and behaviors.
  • Bob Lee, renowned management consultant, and Anna Marie Valerio, from Effective Leadership Strategies, will bring us into the world of coaching for leadershipan exceptional opportunity for professional development from master coaches.
  • David Peterson, from PDI, will give us his insights on global perspectives on leadership developmenta must have for practitioners dealing with issues across borders.
  • Jack Phillips and Patti Phillips, from the ROI Institute, will show how to demonstrate your value to the customer by measuring the ROI (Return On Investment) of consulting projects.
  • Ben Schneider, from the University of Maryland and PRA, and Susan White, from PDRI, will lead a session on service climate: providing high levels of customer service, establishing an organizational climate that will support those efforts, and identifying ways to measure the service climate that are appropriate to the organization and industry.
  • Vicki Vandaveer, from The Vandaveer Group, will share valuable lessons from her extensive experience in successful consulting and in cultivating client relationships.
