Proposed Changes in Article II of the SIOP Bylaws (International Affiliates)

The Executive Committee recommends changing the wording of Foreign to International regarding Society Foreign Affiliates wherever it appears in the SIOP bylaws. The rationale is that the word foreign can have a negative interpretation. The word international is free of bias and more clearly represents SIOPs goal of inclusiveness and wish to reach out to the international I-O community. This change also complies with current practice.

The proposed changes are detailed below. For convenience, both old and new language is indicated. Language to be deleted is indicated by strikethrough characters and new language is underlined.

Article II: Membership

3b. Society Fellows shall at the time of their election to Society Fellow status have been Society Members or Society Foreign International Affiliates for no less than 2 years.

5. Society Foreign International Affiliates shall be those who reside in other than the U.S. and who otherwise meet the criteria for Society Member or Society Associate status with the exception that membership in APA or APS is not required. Society Student Affiliates shall be students presently engaged in formal study related to the purpose of the Society as stated in Article I, Section 2e.

5d. To be eligible for Fellow status, Society Foreign International Affiliates shall have met all criteria for Society Member status with the exception that membership in APA or APS is not required.

6. The Membership Committee of the Society will receive applications for Society Member, Society Associate, and Society Foreign International and Student Affiliate status in the Society.

7. The Fellowship Committee of the Society will review the qualifications of all persons nominated for Society Fellow status. A Society Member or Society Foreign International Affiliate may be nominated for Society Fellow status by either a Society Member or a Society Fellow. He or she must be sponsored by three Society Fellows. The nominator may be one of the sponsors if he or she is a Society Fellow. Candidates for Fellow status in APA and/or APS through this Society must also comply with the procedures prescribed by APA and/or APS for new Fellows.
