Candidate Profiles

Candidate profiles for the four offices with terms commencing April 2021 are posted below. The offices include President-Elect, Financial Officer/Secretary, Membership Services Officer, and Publications Officer. Voting will be open from November 2-December 1, 2020.

For this election, candidates were asked to provide a biography describing their job title, affiliation, work experience, and educational background, including any experience particularly relevant to the board position for which they have been nominated; and, a statement describing how they believe the position for which they have been nominated can best support and execute on the new SIOP Strategic Plan over the coming three year term.


 

Alexis Fink

Bio:

I have spent two decades using I/O psychology principles and methods to help organizations and the workers that comprise them navigate and thrive times of uncertainty and transition. In addition to classically I/O work around leadership, selection, performance management, diversity, culture, and engagement, my work with organizations in times of change has included deep work on strategy, value propositions and business processes. Fifteen years working across Microsoft, Intel and Facebook have given me expertise in digitization, forecasting, data management and working collaboratively in complex ecosystems. I’ve effectively led large organizations and managed complex projects.

In addition to my work as a practitioner, I have continued active research. I’m an Affiliated Research Scientist at USC, and have over 100 Vita lines to my credit, including 2 recent books. I’ve had the privilege of teaching in two I/O doctoral programs and have served as a committee member and mentor for dozens of graduate students. I have prioritized service to SIOP, chairing an LEC, the Futures Task Force and the Visibility Committee, presenting seven SIOP pre-conference workshops, serving as an editor for IOP and several editorial boards, and serving on the SIOP Executive Board as the Conference and Programs Portfolio Officer. I was honored to receive SIOP’s 2019 Distinguished Service Award, and am a SIOP Fellow. Through my two decades of service to SIOP I have built strong relationships and appreciation for our governing structure, the importance of service all our constituencies, and the critical role of our Administrative Office.

Statement:

If I win the honor of serving as your President, I will partner actively with the Executive Board and Administrative office to pursue three goals to ensure that SIOP thrives for many years to come:

  1. Expand our portfolio of strategies for community engagement and revenue. Our annual conference is a crown jewel and for many the center of our community. We need a broader portfolio of ways to connect with one another, to deliver outstanding content, and to ensure that SIOP remains healthy for the future.
  2. Improve our effectiveness as an organization. We have opportunities to improve our service to members and society though upgrading our social and digital infrastructure. Increasing diversity and inclusion within SIOP will help us better execute our to mission; upgrading our digital systems will improve our ability to fulfil that mission.
  3. Increase our influence. The 4th Industrial Revolution is bringing new challenges and new opportunities to the Science of People at Work. We are well positioned to help craft the future of work to make it more fair and science-based, through becoming more multidisciplinary, and deepening our policy engagement as we strive to support worker well-being and effective organizations through the science, practice, teaching and advocacy of I/O psychology.

I am an experienced and effective leader, passionate about SIOP, and have dedicated many years to helping organizations successfully navigate periods of transition and uncertainty. I sincerely hope for the opportunity to contribute further through service in this extraordinary role!


Stephen Stark

Bio:

Stephen Stark is a Professor of I-O Psychology and Department Chair at the University of South Florida. He received his PhD in 2002 from the University of Illinois. He is a Fellow of SIOP, APA, and the U.S. Army Research Institute (ARI). His teaching and research focus on improving noncognitive measurement in organizations to promote fairness in selection, performance, and retention. His work with ARI to develop the Tailored Adaptive Personality Assessment System for applicant screening received the 2015 SIOP M. Scott Myers Award for Applied Research in the Workplace and the 2020 International Personnel Assessment Council Innovations in Assessment Award. Throughout his career, Dr. Stark has collaborated with organizations and the military, published in top journals, and taught I-O doctoral students having academic and applied career aspirations. Dr. Stark has been active in SIOP since 1998. He has represented SIOP on the APA Council of Representatives, chaired the Scientific Affairs Committee, served on the External Relations and Workshops Committees, and currently serves on the International Affairs and Fellows Committees. Dr. Stark has also served on National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine committees on Measuring Human Capabilities (2015) and Strengthening Air Force Human Capital Management (2020). He is a Council Member of the International Test Commission, Editor of International Journal of Testing, and on the boards of Journal of Business and Psychology, Applied Psychological Measurement, Personnel Assessments and Decisions, European Journal of Psychological Assessment, African Journal of Psychological Assessment, and International Journal of Selection and Assessment.

Statement:

SIOP has made great strides in membership growth, conference participation, and overall impact in the last decade. These successes have resulted from effective leadership, communications, advocacy, and tireless committee and individual member efforts. Collectively, we have raised awareness among policymakers of how I-O science and practice benefits individuals and organizations, how I-O skills play a vital role in team science, and there’s a clarion call now to help institutions and communities do more to address social injustice, as well as profound health and economic concerns.

SIOP must now adapt and plan for an extended period of fiscal challenge. We must find ways to engage existing members and attract new members with a goal of inclusivity. Virtual meetings cannot replace or indefinitely sustain the energy and feeling of community created by physically coming together, but they allow participation by individuals who might not typically attend, such as international members, students, and members with dependents or limited income.

Toward SIOP’s mission of “enhancing human well-being and performance in organizational and work settings”, I will strive to:

  • Expand SIOP’s presence and membership base by creating more opportunities for individuals to participate in conferences and committees. Activities allowing in-person and virtual attendees should become a mainstay for future meetings and governance.
  • Support growth and diversity of the profession and future leadership structure through mentoring initiatives, programs that increase awareness of I-O careers earlier in the education system, and by working with APA and publishers to devote more attention to I-O psychology in undergraduate materials.

  • Mo Wang

    Bio:

    I am a Professor and Lanzillotti-McKethan Eminent Scholar Chair at the University of Florida. I received my Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University and am a Fellow of SIOP, APA, and APS. My research focuses on older worker employment and retirement, occupational health psychology, human resource management, and quantitative methods. My research has yielded 200+ scholarly publications and has appeared in outlets such as BBC News, NPR, and The New York Times. It pushes the envelope to advance the science of psychology applied to the workplace and informs the strategies for improving individual and organizational well-being and effectiveness. I served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Psychology for 11 years and currently serve as the Founding Editor for Work, Aging and Retirement. I also served as the Director for the Science of Organizations Program at NSF. In addition, I consult with organizations and government agencies on numerous projects on personnel selection, performance management, leadership development, and vocational education.

    I am proud to have served SIOP in elected and non-elected roles, including Membership Committee Chair, Membership Services Portfolio Officer, and Publications Portfolio Officer. In serving these roles on the SIOP Executive Committee, I have accumulated valuable experience and understanding of SIOP governance. I led the efforts for building the SIOP membership promotion path (from Associate to Member), improving/streamlining SIOP awards practices (e.g., establishing COI policies and elevating committee membership requirements for SIOP Distinguished Awards), and reforming SIOP Fellowship processes and criteria to be more inclusive of all members.

    Statement:

    SIOP has been weathering the storm of COVID-19. Although this challenge is profound, it has shown how resilient our community is to such a massive external shock. It is my belief that with our deep commitment to I-O Psychology as a profession and enthusiasm for the work that we do together, SIOP will sail through this storm safely and continue to thrive. However, this crisis has also revealed new opportunities for us to better SIOP and build more sustainable capacity to fulfill our mission. My goals include three themes:

    1. Build a more open and inclusive membership base for SIOP. SIOP’s membership should better reflect society as a whole, making it more adaptive, visible, and relevant. We need a talent plan for identifying, recruiting, and welcoming diverse talent for the next generation of SIOP members and leaders.
    2. Foster more engaged and efficient communication between our membership and external stakeholders. This will serve to facilitate I-O psychology’s collaboration with organization leaders, communities, and policymakers to understand and confront relevant real-world problems and translate scientific knowledge in a timely manner to promote individual and organizational health and effectiveness.
    3. Diversify SIOP’s income sources to improve SIOP’s financial capacity. Currently, a majority of SIOP’s income is tied to the annual conference. When the conference is interrupted, the financial health of SIOP is threatened. We need to develop new sources of revenue, not only to supplement our conference income but also to provide new financial capacities to support the future growth of SIOP.

Eric Heggestad

Bio:

Since receiving my PhD in psychology in 1997 from the University of Minnesota, I have worked in both practice (U.S. Air Force, HumRRO, private consultant) and academic settings (Colorado State University, UNC Charlotte). I have been at UNC Charlotte since 2005, where I am a professor of psychological science and organizational science. I led our IO MA program for 10 years, transitioning it from a full-time daytime program to an evening program for working professionals (which generates revenue for our department) and I am currently serving as Chair of the Department of Psychological Science. I am a fellow of SIOP.

I have had financial management experiences both inside and outside of SIOP that will allow me to be successful in the Financial Officer/Secretary role. Perhaps most relevant to the role, I have successfully managed our department budget within the complexities of the state system. I have worked with my team to make important shifts in our department’s financial strategy that have directly benefited our faculty. Within SIOP, I have held positions that have allowed me to develop an understanding of SIOPs financial strategies, policies and processes, including serving on the executive board as the Membership Services Officer (2012-1015), the planning committee for the 2019 Leading Edge Consortium (Atlanta), and the Strategic Planning Committee for the Annual Conference, among a variety of other roles. Through these roles I have developed the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully serve as a steward of SIOPs financial resources.

Statement:

I have studied the 2021-2023 SIOP Vision, Mission, Values and Goals and Objectives document. I fully support the strategy as laid out and believe that the implementation of this strategy will have a positive influence on SIOP’s future.

The pandemic has shown a bright light on a well-known threat to SIOP; that the organization is highly dependent on income generated from its in-person meetings (the Annual Conference and the Leading Edge Consortium). Wisely, this threat was identified in the strategic plan, primarily Action Statement 2.5, “Reduce our fiscal dependence on in-person events by diversifying our revenue streams to ensure the society’s long term financial health”. This action statement must be a priority for the organization. As Financial Officer/Secretary (FO/S) I would be committed to keeping a focus on this action step and to working with SIOP leaders and members to identify and implement additional revenue streams.

While the FO/S works with the Administrative Office to manage SIOPs budget (an important part of the job, for sure), a key aspect of this role is working with the executive team to make decisions facing the organization – of course, with a mindfulness regarding the financial implications of those decisions. Having served as Membership Services officer (and other leadership roles) I have experience working as part of SIOPs leadership team. In the role of FO/S, I will work with the leadership team to steward SIOPs financial resources in a way that is consistent with our mission, vision, values and strategic plan.


William Shepherd

Bio:

  • Will Shepherd obtained his doctoral and master’s degree in Industrial-Organization psychology with a minor in quantitative psychology at Bowling Green State University. He received his bachelor's degree in finance and psychology from The University of Northern Iowa. He is a licensed psychologist in Texas and a Fellow of SIOP and APA. In addition to presenting at various conferences, his research has been published in academic journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Personnel Psychology. He has served as an adjunct professor at multiple institutions including at The Ohio State University since 2011. Shepherd’s work has been recognized by SIOP with the “Wiley Award for Excellence in Survey Research” in both 2016 and 2018, the “M. Scott Myers Award” in 2017, and jointly by SIOP and SHRM with the “Human Resources Management Impact Award” in both 2015 and 2020.
  • He has been an active SIOP volunteer as a committee member (Membership, Annual Conference Local Arrangements, Workshops, Professional Practice, Leading Edge Consortium Planning, Distinguished Professional Contributions, Election Campaign Behavior Policy Task Force, Visionary Circle, Small Grants Award Committee), Co-Chair (LEC Programming Task Force), and Chair (Professional Practice Committee).
  • At Wendy’s and Huntington he has held senior HR roles leading talent management programs. Relevant to SIOP’s Financial Officer - Secretary Position, he has significant experience with the development and oversight of large corporate budgets. Statement:

  • COVID-19 is an unprecedented economic and health crisis for SIOP. The pandemic is having an impact on virtually every aspect of our work and personal lives as I-O psychologists, including how we engage with SIOP. Our conference attendees and sponsoring vendors are operating in a new budgetary landscape resulting in lower spending on conference travel and sponsorships. Historically, the Annual Conference and LEC have served the dual purposes of bringing us together in-person as a profession and generating significant revenue for SIOP. We need to adapt these events to a post-COVID world. The next three years will require thoughtful financial analysis, planning, and execution to ensure SIOP thrives both in the short and long-term. While there will be potential financial pitfalls, the crisis will also prompt us to explore possibilities about how we can provide value to our membership in new cost-effective ways. In February of this year, as part of my role as Co-Chair of the SIOP Executive Director Search Committee, I had a chance to participate in a portion of SIOP’s strategic planning process in Austin, TX. The work resulted in a well-designed strategic plan. However, the onset of the pandemic will require SIOP to revisit and carefully monitor the operational aspects of the plan to ensure that the investments being made are consistent with its revenues. While short-term austerity may be required, we also must look to the future and make foundational investments in technology (e.g., the www.siop.com website) and other programming to benefit our members.


Jolene Skinner

Bio:

Jolene Skinner, PhD, is the Amazon HR4HR Leader for a portfolio of Corporate HR and Recruiting teams (2,400 employees) that support AWS, Devices & Services, Entertainment, Ads & Media, Business Development, and G&A. She started her 20-year career in academics, teaching Psychology and Women’s Studies, and switched to practice in 2005, where she has worked in consulting (Willis Towers Watson) and global HR (Sitel, Bridgestone Americas, and Dell Technologies). Jolene has spent her career focusing on culture, leadership, the employee experience, and service. Career highlights include winning the 2009 NIU Golden Anniversary Alumni Award for her work at Dell on work life flexibility and developing women leaders. From 2011-2012, she served as the Chair of the IT Survey Group, the high tech survey consortium. In 2014, Jolene founded Impact Nashville, a non-profit women’s giving circle, which in 2020 will have awarded over $350,000 to civic organizations supporting under-served populations in Nashville, Tennessee. And in 2017, Jolene helped land Sitel as the first BPO on the Training Top 125 list for her work creating and implementing the Compass People strategy. She has served as the SIOP CE Coordinator, creating the first online CE Ethics course and initiating our partnership with SHRM for CE credits. Jolene also started the Top Minds and Bottom Lines Visibility series and has been an active conference presenter, reviewer, and ambassador. Currently, she is a mentor in the Women’s Inclusion Network. Jolene has a PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Northern Illinois University and is Hogan, SPHR, and SHRM-SCP certified.

Statement:

I am honored to be nominated for the SIOP Financial Officer-Secretary, and my commitment in this role is to be a financial steward for all of our members and ensure we stay focused on our vision. I believe my experience as a non-profit founder will translate well to this role. I was ultimately accountable for and entrusted with each member’s $1,000 annual contribution and had to demonstrate success to ensure our membership sustained and grew. I am committed to the same for SIOP. If anything, 2020 has proven that the science and practice of I/O psychology against real world problems is critical. Organizations are struggling to figure how to be productive and profitable in our current environment, how to support more virtual work, and are reconciling how to truly support a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. Employees are experiencing high levels of work life conflict, burn out, and need more focus on health and well-being. As an organization, SIOP has to choose where we invest our resources to help solve these problems, and I believe we are pivoting in the right direction, including in how we support our members. This year we flexed to a new format for our annual conference so that our members could continue to learn, develop, and connect in meaningful ways. 2021 will be even more challenging, and I am ready to serve as the Financial Officer-Secretary to support our success, drive real-world impact, and ensure our sustainability as an organization.

Gena Cox

Bio:

I knew a career in Industrial/Organizational Psychology was for me once I realized that my interests in both business and human behavior could be merged in our discipline. I earned a PhD in Industrial/Organizational psychology from the University of South Florida and since then my work has been focused on using I/O science to influence leaders’ decisions. That training has made me a confident problem solver and impactful leader, even in domains beyond the discipline. And what could be better than working to enhance the experience of employees; one client at a time!

The PhD in I/O psychology enabled me to construct the unconventional practitioner’s career I craved. I have spent 20+ years advising top-level leaders at Fortune 500 and global companies how to build and lead highly engaged, diverse, and innovative teams. That work has included research, leadership, consulting and executive coaching. I have built and lead corporate selection assessment, employee survey, and organizational development teams. And, I have served as an adjunct professor of industrial psychology and strategic human resources at the graduate level. I am currently Senior Consultant and Lead Researcher at Perceptyx, Inc.

My primary focus now is helping business leaders enhance inclusion and career mobility for Black women to leadership roles. I/O psychology science and practice lessons will play a large role in that work. I would love to see I/O psychology become the “go-to” science for addressing diversity and inclusion challenges in the workplace.

Statement:

SIOP’s 2021 to 2023 strategic goals focus on real-world influence, inclusion, collaboration, and the future of the science and practice of I/O. The global pandemic, demands for racial justice, and the emerging realities of global warming, make the world feel smaller and each of us more vulnerable. In the organizational environment, these disruptions require pragmatic, inclusive, and collaborative solutions.

I/O already has many research- and practice-based insights that are applicable to the challenges of the moment (e.g., stress and burnout, employee satisfaction, psychological safety, resilience, talent selection, crisis leadership, remote work, etc.). However, other disciplines often get the limelight for work that has its origins in I/O. To elevate the impact of each member, I would like to strengthen our connections to a wider range of organization leaders and communities, for both applied research and practice.

SIOP’s members are more diverse than ever. Whether gender, age, race/ethnicity, education attainment level, LGBTQ+ status, neurodiversity, intersectionality, or other dimensions of similarity, I want to help the organization to understand these unique needs. I want all members to feel they belong, and can thrive, in SIOP.

Social media has sped up the movement of knowledge. Here today; invisible tomorrow. How can we ensure that our insights have a longer shelf-life in the most visible channels? How can we increase engagement with our ideas across the spectrum of stakeholders internal and external to SIOP?

I would like to help Member Services address these challenges in the 2021 to 2024 term.


Kevin Impelman

Bio:

Kevin currently serves as the Director of Consulting Products & Services at Summit Leadership Partners. Kevin has extensive experience serving as a trusted advisor to clients and expert across different industries in the areas of product development, leadership strategy and talent assessment. Kevin partners with clients to provide proven solutions while providing thought leadership and developing innovative services and products. Prior to joining Summit Leadership Partners, Kevin served as the VP of Consulting and R&D at Hollweg Assessment Partners, where he was responsible for consulting and research initiatives for individual and organizational consulting offerings. Kevin has also served as Executive Consultant Leader for IBM where he led consulting engagements including large-scale assessment and selection systems, talent acquisition and recruitment processes, survey and engagement projects, leadership development programs, and workforce analytics applications.

Kevin holds a PhD in Industrial/Organizational psychology from the University of North Texas, a BA from Southern Methodist University, and is a licensed psychologist in the state of Texas. An active SIOP Member, Kevin presents frequently at SIOP’s annual conferences, attends leading edge consortiums regularly, served on the selection advisory group for SIOP’s latest executive director, and currently serves on the Continuing Education Committee. Serving SIOP on a local level, Kevin plans and coordinates events for his local Dallas Area I/O Psychologist (DAIOP) group and is a frequent guest lecturer and mentor for the I/O Psychology Program at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Statement:

SIOP’s strength and impact on the broader community is directly related to how representative and engaged its members are to address the real-world problems facing organizations and workers. The membership services officer role plays a critical role in executing SIOP’s latest strategic plan. Specifically, when determining how members are approved and rewarded, SIOP will need to ensure its practices related to membership are relevant and inclusive in order to reflect the needs of the organizations and workers we serve. Having a deep understanding of the background and expertise of our members will allow SIOP to respond in an agile manner to quickly address those needs as they change over time. Bringing members together by identifying common locations or expertise requires a membership that is well understood and engaged to convene quickly and stand at the forefront of emerging trends and needs. Leveraging data from our members, SIOP should be able to facilitate and enhance networks that bring our members together to work towards common solutions. Finally, a member who clearly understands the value that SIOP brings to them, both personally and professionally, will seek opportunities for lifelong learning and promote SIOP with others to build the pipeline of future members and leaders.


Lorin Mueller

Bio:

I am currently the Managing Director of Assessment at the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) where I oversee the development of the National Physical Therapy Examinations (NPTE), approximately 20 other assessments and related services. I previously worked at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) as a Principal Research Scientist. I serve on several advisory boards, and served as a past president of the Personnel Testing Council-Metro Washington (PTCMW). I received my PhD in industrial and organizational psychology in 2000 from the University of Houston with a specialization in statistics and measurement.

I have a long history of service to SIOP, much of it volunteering within the Membership Services Officer’s portfolio. I served as an emergency chair for the Placement Center in 2017 and have served on several awards subcommittees, chairing one. I am currently the chair of the External Relations Committee, and I have worked on the Workshop Committee, Electronic Communications Committee, and Visibility Committee. I have a broad understanding of how SIOP works and the challenges it faces.

My current role at FSBPT gives me key insight into the challenges the Membership Services Officer faces. I oversee an exam development program that, like SIOP, relies on hundreds of volunteer each year. Because SIOP has a small professional staff, volunteers are our lifeblood, and engaging them effectively is critical. As a mission-driven nonprofit, we rely on providing value to our members and stakeholders. “Member Service” is an essential performance element of my job.

Statement:

It should be no surprise that SIOP, like many other professional organizations, is at a financial crossroads. The cancellation of the Annual Meeting and LEC resulted in a massive revenue loss that threatens the high level of service to which we’ve become accustomed as SIOP members. The incoming Membership Services Officer must consider revenue diversification as their number one job. If elected, I will work with the Executive Board to consider ways to make existing services within the Membership portfolio more valuable to members, increase the appeal of SIOP to non-members, increase the revenue of existing valuable services, and find innovative ways of providing new services within the context of an organization primarily run by volunteers.

I believe I am well qualified to achieve this goal because I have done it before. Within my own organization, I have been able to successful translate many great suggestions from colleagues, consultants, members, educators and examinees into technical improvements, new services within the scope of what we do well, and effective communication of the value of our services. As a result, we have grown and diversified our revenue. SIOP is well positioned to increase revenue through improvements to existing services and creating externally-facing products that can benefit our members.

The purpose of SIOP is to provide value to our members. The next Membership Services Officer needs to be focused working with the Executive Board to increase revenue through improved value to members. I will do that.


Tiffany Poeppelman

Bio:

At LinkedIn, I am the Director of the Business Leadership Program, applying emerging and classic learning and development approaches to over 100 early career talent professionals annually. I also lead diversity hiring and selection efforts that impact our global sales organization of over 6,000 employees. I serve as a professional speaker to global audiences about learning technology, creating a culture of learning, and change management.

Within SIOP, I have served in many roles including Membership Committee Program Chair (2019-2021), Quarterly TIP columnist for The Modern App (2015-2018), and Electronic Communications Social Media Subcommittee Chair (2013-2016). Through my time serving for SIOP, I’ve gained deep experience partnering with SIOP officers, Committee Chairs, and the Administrative Office (AO) on member-centric areas of focus. I was also honored to receive the 2019 Presidential Scientist-Practitioner Award for my contributions to the field.

While leading the Membership Committee the past two years, I’ve observed a greater need to ensure member offerings are tailored and add value to our diverse network of SIOP professionals. With my unique learning background and experience guiding professionals through critical moments in their career, I will leverage my professional best practices such as tailoring information and services to support needs, utilizing mentorship programs to connect the community, and guiding professionals through transitional moments.

I find the work of talent development to be deeply gratifying and am excited about the opportunity to apply my experience to current and future SIOP members and affiliated professionals.

Statement:

I have three key goals to accomplish through the SIOP Membership Services Officer position. With I/O Psychology’s growth comes the need to strengthen the diversity and retention of our membership base.

Goal 1: Implement a 2025 membership vision for our society - As external landscapes evolve, SIOP needs to continually revisit membership models and create a membership strategy for our society that benefits our members. I will compellingly communicate and implement new approaches for selecting and onboarding new members worldwide, retaining members over time, and supporting new ways to generate value for our members in partnership with the Financial Officer and Executive Board (EB).

Goal 2: Understand member needs through data-driven evaluation - I will seize opportunities to ensure SIOP deeply understands member needs by leveraging the Membership Analytics team I established 2 years ago to deliver trends and inform data-driven evaluations within the EB, AO, and committees. I will also advocate for updating SIOP’s data infrastructure to increase greater transparency and gather more critical SIOP membership insights in the future.

Goal 3: Evangelize member needs through a deeper integration across the broader portfolio structure - To advance SIOP member goals, I will build on the portfolio foundation by analyzing links between committees, synchronizing collective member efforts across teams, providing visibility into member needs, and ensuring a stronger coordination between programs to unify member experiences.

Reeshad Dalal

Bio:

Reeshad Dalal (Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is a Professor of I-O Psychology at George Mason University and a Fellow of SIOP and the Association for Psychological Science (APS). He has published 66 journal articles and book chapters, and has received over $4M in research funding from the National Science Foundation, Army Research Institute, and Department of Homeland Security. Of particular relevance to the position of SIOP Publications Portfolio Officer, Dr. Dalal has co-edited two books (one in the SIOP Frontiers series), serves or has served on several editorial boards (Journal of Applied Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, and Journal of Business and Psychology), and has published in the IOP journal on several occasions. His administrative positions at his university—he was formerly the Chair of the Psychology Department and is currently on the Dean’s Senior Leadership Council—have provided him a wealth of experience relevant to the Publications Portfolio Officer position: (1) knowledge regarding I-O’s connections to other areas of psychology and to the other social/behavioral sciences, (2) an understanding of a variety of research impact metrics, both traditional and novel (i.e., “altmetrics”), (3) experience chairing interdisciplinary teams, (4) experience hiring for senior positions, and (5) experience with contracting. Dr. Dalal also holds or has held several positions of responsibility at SIOP: he is slated to chair SIOP’s International Affairs Committee starting April 2021, he is currently the team lead for SIOP’s Defense & Security Advocacy Area, and he previously chaired SIOP’s APS Committee.

Statement:

I believe my experiences (see Candidate Bio) have prepared me well for the responsibilities of the SIOP Publications Portfolio Officer. Below, I outline my goals for this position—and, in parentheses, I include a crosswalk to the corresponding objectives from SIOP’s 2021-23 Strategic Plan.

  • Facilitate the work of SIOP’s book and journal editorial teams as they aim to publish work that is: (1) highly visible to I-O researchers and practitioners but also to the STEM disciplines more broadly and to policymakers, and (2) timely (i.e., responsive to current events/trends) but also methodologically rigorous and important over longer timeframes (SIOP Objectives 1.1/3.4).
  • Diversify SIOP’s book and journal editorial teams to reflect a more representative set of perspectives, including more practitioners, members of underrepresented demographic groups, and international members (SIOP Objective 2.2).
  • Renegotiate and if necessary rebid SIOP’s IOP and Frontiers Series contracts to procure more favorable financial terms. This is particularly important now, given SIOP’s COVID-induced financial constraints (SIOP Objective 2.5).
  • Support recently proposed initiatives--such as a replication-focused journal, a corporate executive-focused “I-O Business Review” (akin to Harvard Business Review), and student-focused publications--if they are financially sustainable (SIOP Objectives 1.1/1.2/4.4).
  • Work closely with SIOP’s Communications Portfolio Officer to ensure quick dissemination of information about SIOP publications via social media, podcasts, press releases, and TIP (SIOP Objective 1.2).
  • After SIOP’s financial situation recovers: Explore the possibility of providing SIOP publications at discounted rates to student affiliates, members from developing countries, and members experiencing financial hardship (SIOP Objectives 2.3/2.4).

Alexandra Zelin

Bio:

I am an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. I received my Ph.D. and MA in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Akron. My research focuses primarily on sexual violence and gender-related issues within and outside of the workplace. My commitment to SIOP and ability to manage large projects and people is evidenced through my current role as Chair of the Women’s Inclusion Network (WIN; 2019-2021). My major accomplishments in this role are successfully petitioning to become a full standing committee and assisting in passing the Family Care Grant; I have also launched a SIOP Climate Survey with Drs. Ruggs and Macoukji, with an executive report to be submitted in spring 2021. I have also served SIOP as WIN programming lead (2018-2019), on the Advocacy: Education and Training team (2019-current), as a student volunteer, and as a student contracted with the Professional Practice Committee to complete a comprehensive job competency model for I-O Psychologists. I also review for the Conference every year since eligibility and recently reviewed the first Anti-Racism Grant proposals.

Outside of SIOP, I serve APA Division 35 (Society for the Psychology of Women) in a number of roles, including Janet Shibley Hyde Graduate Student Grant co-chair for 4 years (plus 5 years as a graduate student), Co-Chair of the Violence Against Women Committee for 3 years (lead chair 2019-current), and committee member on the Committee on Academic Feminist Psychologists (2020-current). I was also recently chosen to be Membership Chair of the division.

Statement:

As Publications Officer (PO), I believe I can effectively support SIOP’s four goals in their new strategic plan:

  1. Promoting and translating scientific knowledge: Our field excels in our ability to translate scientific knowledge to promote organizational health; I plan to maintain and grow this capability by welcoming a wide array of readership outside of typical I-O oriented positions, thus growing the reach of SIOP as a whole;
  2. Building a diverse and inclusive SIOP: Through staffing and contracting, I will ensure a broad range of diversity (including but not limited to race, gender, citizenship) in membership and content throughout all SIOP-affiliated publications to reflect our fields’ growing diversity;
  3. Alignment of those invested in improving work and the workplace: As PO, I will continue using our publishing platforms to support SIOP’s efforts to present the most recent and relevant information, including working to eliminate the research-practitioner gap to the betterment of all and inspiring action for continuous improvement; and,
  4. Generating future I-O capabilities: Where better to get ideas than the most recent publications? My continued focus will be on how to best utilize our knowledge through science and practice while continuing to teach others in the process. Our publications serve as continuing education for all members of SIOP by allowing us to remain up to date on the most recent science and practice.

As the PO, I would strive to continue aligning our publications with SIOP’s strategic goals. I look forward to the opportunity to further serve SIOP.
