APA Council Election Results: Congratulations Tammy Allen and Gary Carter

SIOP is pleased to announce that Tammy Allen, University of South Florida, and Gary Carter, PDRI, have been elected to serve as APA Council Representatives for Division 14 for the term January 2022 to December 2024. Allen has been serving as one of SIOP’s APA Council Representatives since 2019, while Carter will be serving in this role for the first time.

Tammy Allen is Distinguished University Professor within the department of psychology. Her research is focused on individual, organizational, and societal factors that relate to worker career development and wellbeing, with a particular interest in the intersection between work and family. She uses multiple methods and tools in her research, which has been cited over 30,000 times and has received multiple awards. Dr. Allen has also co-edited and co-authored multiple books. She has been a visiting scholar and guest speaker at universities and organizations across the world.

Allen believes that the APA’s current goal of utilizing psychology to make a positive impact on critical societal issues and elevation of the public’s understanding of, regard for, and use of psychology are aligned with SIOP’s new strategic plan. She also feels that the APA and SIOP are at a crossroads as various efforts to advance the interests of I-O psychology within APA, such as the establishment of the Office of Applied Psychology, have begun to take root but are yet to flourish. Allen trusts that this time spent in her final term will assist Division 14 in reaching its goals. Allen has held a variety of positions in SIOP governance, including SIOP president from 2013-2014, which has provided useful experience as she takes on this new term.

Gary Carter leads the PDRI’s professional services division, which provides practical solutions tailored to each client’s unique needs in the areas of hiring, competency modeling, career development, and performance management. His deep commitment to delivering solutions that make a difference for customers has been a driving force in building and sustaining PDRI’s reputation as a customer-oriented and trusted provider of effective talent management solutions.

Although this is Carter’s first time participating as an APA Council Representative, he has extensive service to other SIOP committees including the Professional Practice Series committee, the Awards Committee (as the Chair of the M. Scott Myers Award Subcommittee), the Professional Practice Committee, the Visibility Committee, and the Fellowship Committee. He was also the first Chair of the SIOP Visibility Committee (2000 – 2002). This, along with Carter’s background as a scientist-practitioner and business executive, will allow him to effectively represent SIOP on the APA Council and further develop programs set by previous council representatives.

Per the APA website, the Council of Representatives is the legislative body of APA and has full power and authority over the affairs and funds of the association within the limitations set by the certificate of incorporation and the bylaws, including the power to review, upon its own initiative, the actions of any board, committee, division, or affiliated organization. Council is composed of representatives of divisions; representatives of state, provincial, and territorial psychological associations (SPTAs); and the members of the Board of Directors.
