SIOP-Endorsed Candidate Wins APA Election

SIOP is pleased to announce that Cynthia de las Fuentes, Ph.D., SIOP’s endorsed candidate, has been elected as APA president. Dr. de las Fuentes will begin her presidency in 2024 and will focus on enhancing inclusivity and belonging within the APA.

"The SIOP Executive Board was proud to endorse Cynthia de las Fuentes for APA President," said SIOP President Mo Wang. "We believe she will provide strong leadership and proactively seek applied and I-O psychology perspectives on key societal issues."

de las Fuentes has an extensive background in consultation, psychotherapy, and forensic evaluations, services that she offers in both English and Spanish. She has also been involved in APA governance for more than a decade, serving as a member of the APA Board of Directors and a past chair of the Council Leadership Team.

"I sincerely believe that applied psychologists are one of psychology’s brightest lights and that championing them, and their work, is important to strengthening our profession, broadening the public’s perceptions of the usefulness of psychology, and attracting future psychologists into an exciting part of our discipline,” de las Fuentes said. “I am grateful for SIOP's endorsement of our campaign and I look forward to our future collaborations."

de las Fuentes has received impressive accolades including Psychologist of the Year by the Texas Psychological Association and the 2019 National Latinx Psychological Association Distinguished Madrina Recognition for Outstanding Accomplishments.

SIOP endorsed de las Fuentes because her professional history demonstrated:

  • A strong grasp of applied psychology and a thoughtful perspective about how to promote applied interests within APA.
  • A strong commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility through both research and practice.
  • Extensive experience in APA governance, serving in a variety of roles.
