The Annual Meeting of the Southern Management Association has begun accepting submissions until April 5th, 2019.
As this year’s track chairs, we would like to personally invite you to submit a paper, symposium, and/or a Professional Development Institute (PDI) proposal for consideration as part of this year’s conference. We imagine that the members of SIOP would be particularly interested in submitting to either the Organizational Behavior track or the joint Human Resource Management/Research Methods track.

We hope you’ll consider contributing to this year’s conference program, which would benefit tremendously from the shared expertise of the members of SIOP!

#SIOP19 Theme Track Advances Science Practice Translation

The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology embraces the integration of science and practice, a concept memorialized in SIOP’s strategic goals as, “Model and reinforce the effective integration of science and practice.”

SIOP membership draws heavily from both the academic and practice arenas, and the Society is richer for the different perspectives they bring. As any baker will tell you, how the ingredients are combined can make all the difference in the texture and flavor of the end product.

President Talya Bauer has made integration of the two perspectives a central part of her leadership, with the Science–Practice Opportunities for Translation (SPOT) Task Force. (Read an update on the SPOT Task Force in her most recent TIP column.

Substantial Funding Opportunities from NSF Relevant to SBE Scientists

There are new funding opportunities at NSF that might be of interest to you. They are called the “Big Ideas” and they focus on critical issues in science and society. The purpose of each Big Idea is to motivate dynamic and innovative scholars to create and implement new and potentially transformative interdisciplinary approaches to some very large societal challenges.

NSF encourages:

  • every social scientist,
  • every behavioral scientist,
  • every member of an organization who is willing to collaborate with social or behavioral scientists, and
  • every scholar who is looking for new opportunities to advance science in ways that best serve the public

to think “big”.

Are You Turning Insights Into Action With Big Data?

Today’s advanced technology gives us the ability to access mountains of data. Although this is helpful for organizations, it can be difficult to implement all that data for smart business decisions. Big data alone can’t create insight, knowledge, or change. That’s where industrial and organizational (I-O) psychologists come in.

As experts in workplace psychology, I-O psychologists ask the right questions at the right time to harness large amounts of data that solve business challenges. To show the value that I-O psychologists bring to the big data table, SIOP’s Visibility Committee has released a video on the SIOP YouTube page.
