Designed to celebrate and promote the science and practice of I-O psychology, Smarter Workplace Awareness Month (SWAM) is an opportunity for SIOP members to help share the many ways I-O psychology makes the workplace smarter—more effective, efficient, productive, and generally a better place for employees and employers to work.

It is also an opportunity for business leaders to learn how I-O psychology and SIOP members can enhance human well-being and performance in organizational and work settings.

Help us celebrate and promote the science and practice of I-O psychology.

SIOP is inviting members to show “I-O Psychology in Action.”

We need your help to bring awareness and understanding to I-O psychology, a field that is often difficult to succinctly explain. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so as you see I-O psychology in action, in your workplace or institution, snap a photo and send it our way.

Send your photos (1920 px x 960 px minimum, .jpg) to Amber Stark at astark@siop.org by Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025. Please include the names and email addresses for any identifiable people in your photos.

Photos may be shared on SIOP social media accounts as part of Smarter Workplace Awareness Month. Photos may also be used in other marketing and communications initiatives beyond SWAM.

Photos must be in their original state and cannot be altered in any way, including but not limited to removing, adding, reversing, or distorting subjects within the frame. By sharing a photo, participants agree that submitted photos can be used by SIOP for marketing and communications purposes.

"I think of I-O psychology as a form of preventive medicine. When people ask what I do, I tell them I help people wake up in the morning without that pit-in-the-stomach feeling. No, I’m not that kind of doctor. But the work we do in I-O psychology helps people navigate their work lives with greater ease and resilience. We help individuals find roles that truly match their skills and talents, making their jobs more rewarding and less stressful. We help them become better at what they do, so they can tackle challenges with more confidence and less friction. Ultimately, when people can move through their workdays with greater ease, they’re less stressed and therefore healthier. That’s why I believe I-O Psychology is a form of preventive medicine."

By using a scientific, data-driven approach to help improve employee well-being and job performance, the field of industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology is more relevant today than ever. As an I-O psychology researcher, I'm proud to be part of a profession that has such profound effects on organizations and the people they employ.

I have been a lifelong member of SIOP. SIOP has provided me a sense of community and a great way to interact with friends I see only at SIOP. SIOP has given me many opportunities for continuing education and that has caused me to rethink and revise some of my approaches to consulting. Finally, SIOP gives me a strong sense of identity.
