As artificial intelligence and automation continue to reshape industries, the skills needed to thrive in the modern workplace are changing just as rapidly. The first session in the National Academies’ two-part webinar series, AI, Automation, and the Future of Work: A Series on Workforce Transformation, explores how individuals and organizations can adapt to these profound shifts.
Reskilling, Upskilling, and the Evolving Workforce will examine the critical role of continuous learning—not only as a means of career advancement, but as a foundation for long-term adaptability and fulfillment. Beyond technical expertise, the session highlights the cultural and psychological dimensions of workforce transformation. How do social class, workplace culture, and personal identity influence who thrives in an automated economy? What motivates workers to reinvent themselves amid uncertainty?
Panelists include Rachel Lipson, co-founder and Scholar in Residence at Harvard’s Project on Workforce; Margaret Beier, Professor and Chair of Psychological Sciences at Rice University; Jaime Teevan, Chief Scientist and Technical Fellow at Microsoft; and Mark Chan, Program Manager, and Dennis Stolle, Head of Applied Psychology, from the American Psychological Association. The discussion will be moderated by Deniz Ones, Distinguished McKnight University Professor at the University of Minnesota.
Key topics will include:
- How reskilling and soft skills together drive long-term employability
- The impact of workplace culture and career “fit” on satisfaction and success
- The human and motivational side of workforce evolution
Hosted by the Board on Human-Systems Integration (BOHSI) at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, this session brings together experts from psychology, workforce development, and human factors to discuss not only how we work—but how we grow.
