SIOP President Steven Rogelberg Sits Down with Congressional Modernization Committee Chair Derek Kilmer
SIOP President Steven Rogelberg interviewed Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-WA), Chairman of the House Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress, about the Committee’s mission and goals for the year. During the interview, Chairman Kilmer discussed the Committee’s agenda of improving Congress as a workplace and fostering a more collaborative, inclusive, well-organized, and diverse environment for members of Congress and staff alike. Chairman Kilmer also discussed the important role that I-O psychologists have and continue to play in informing the Committee’s work and providing scientific background that the Committee uses to craft evidence-based policy. Several I-O psychologists have been tapped to testify during Committee hearings or speak with staff on their expertise around diversity and inclusion, hiring and retention, ideologically polarized workplaces, and other topics of importance. The interview will soon be posted on the SIOP advocacy page and other channels.
Senate Releases Majority of Fiscal Year 2022 Appropriations Bills
The Senate this month released their remaining annual appropriations bills for fiscal year (FY) 2022. Included among these is the Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS) funding bill which outlines the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) annual budget. Under the Senate CJS bill, NSF would receive $9.487 billion, which is $1 billion or 11.8 percent above the FY 2021 level but $682 million less than the President’s budget request. The Senate level would be $147 million below what the House version of the bill would provide. The proposed NSF increase would be the biggest for the Foundation in many years but would leave NSF unable to fulfill all of the requested growth proposed in the budget request. While it is up to NSF to determine the exact amount given to each directorate, the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate would benefit from this funding increase. Lewis-Burke’s full analysis of the Senate FY 2022 CJS bill is available here.
SIOP Nominates Kecia Thomas to NASEM Committee on Anti-Racism and DEI in STEM Organizations
In response to a call from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), SIOP nominated Dr. Kecia M. Thomas, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, to join the committee creating a consensus report on “Advancing Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEM Organizations.” Dr. Thomas had previously been selected as a member of a NASEM committee that planned and conducted a similar workshop. SIOP continues to monitor for opportunities to nominate I-O psychologists to committees and panels at the federal level and inform federal policymaking discussions.
