About the HRM Impact Awards Program

The HRM Impact Awards program is a collaboration between the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), the SHRM Foundation, and the SIOP Foundation.

The organizations share a deep commitment to promoting human resource management practices that contribute to the success of today’s global work organizations, making them better places in which to work. Both societies also share a belief that the way to improve practice is to publicize the best available evidence regarding the usefulness and impact of successfully implemented innovative human resource management (HRM) initiatives. The HRM Impact Award was designed with this in mind.

Benefits to organizations receiving this award include:

  • Being a recognized leader in the critically important area of evidence-based HR practice
  • Retaining top HR talent who support and value evidence-based HR practice
  • Attracting top HR talent who want to work for an organization that is recognized as a leader in the area of evidence-based HR practice

In addition, the winner of the HRM Impact Award will receive a plaque presented jointly by SHRM & SIOP at SIOP’s Annual Conference and be recognized in various media outlets highlighting the award and the innovative HRM practice or initiative.

Criteria for Eligibility

Eligibility Requirements

Any for-profit, not-for-profit, or government organization, located anywhere in the world, may apply for recognition of an evidence-based initiative or practice used internally by that organization. Any type of HR practice or initiative may be nominated.

Consulting firms may not apply. Rather, they are encouraged to have their clients submit an application that highlights a practice developed by the consulting firm and used in the client organization. The award will be presented to the organization in which the project or initiative has been implemented, with appropriate recognition also given to the consulting firm or other outside organization that developed or assisted in implementing the project or initiative. Membership in SHRM or SIOP is not required. Applications must be submitted in English.

The featured practice may be currently in use or have been in use within the past five years; however, a practice or initiative within a particular organization can be nominated only once, unless re-submission is specifically invited by the HRM Impact Award Review Committee.

The practice must be established enough to have generated data demonstrating its return on investment (ROI) and/or effectiveness. Applicants must provide measurement data to demonstrate evidence of the practice’s effectiveness and/or ROI. If selected for an award, applicants must be willing to share the details of this practice in a SIOP conference session and a brief video to be posted on the SIOP website.

Award Criteria

Organizations should provide supporting documentation that demonstrates how the practice or initiative being submitted for this award results in tangible benefits to the organization. The practice or initiative should be currently in use or have been in use within the past 5 years. The use of evidence-based human resource management techniques is highly relevant.

The HRM Impact Award Review Committee will review all applications. The Committee will evaluate submissions based on the following criteria:

  • Financial or operational impact on the business or enterprise (for example, demonstrated improvements in productivity, profitability, revenue, market share, or community outcomes).
  • People impact on employees and teams (for example, measured improvements in employee satisfaction, engagement, performance, or turnover; or in teamwork or team performance).
  • Scientific impact on the research and practice of HR, industrial-organizational psychology, or management (for example, extent of the innovative or “game-changing” nature of the initiative or the extent to which the initiative can be replicated in other organizations).
  • Quality of evidence in support of the financial, people, and scientific impacts (for example, the scientific rigor of the impact evidence or the extent to which multiple sources or types of data are used in evaluating impact).

HRM Impact Award Review Committee

Applications will be evaluated by a panel of volunteer judges including both academics and HR practitioners from the four sponsoring organizations, SHRM, SIOP, the SHRM Foundation and the SIOP Foundation.
