SIOP recently completed a process to develop strategic priorities and objectives to shape the future of the Society for the next 3 to 5 years.
“SIOP’s Executive Board continues to apply the principles of organizational effectiveness to support the Society’s long-term success. As part of this work, we conducted a systematic review and update of our strategic priorities, informed in part by input from more than 450 members through focus groups and a survey,” said Scott Tannenbaum, SIOP Past President. “The updated priorities will help guide SIOP over the next several years.”
These new strategic priorities are:
- Research and Practice
- I-O Psychology Education and Development
- Member Value
- Visibility
- Vitality
The most recent strategic goals were developed in 2019-20 and finalized in 2021. Although many remained relevant and have been useful in guiding SIOP’s work, much has changed since these plans were built. We have seen COVID, the Great Resignation, the current wave of layoffs, the proliferation of AI in the workplace, significant cuts to the federal workforce, dismantling of DEI initiatives, and cuts to funding for research. The number of master’s programs and master’s-trained graduates continues to grow, even as doctoral programs are threatened by funding cuts. The breadth and impact of both our research and our applied work continue to expand. I-O psychology is growing rapidly outside the US, most notably in China and India. Social media and technology are creating new opportunities to share our science with policy makers and organizational leaders, and serve our members. Our strategic priorities needed to reflect these changes.
Our five new strategic priorities and their respective objectives are designed to:
- Provide a clear picture of what we value and need to accomplish over time
- Help guide leadership and staff decisions, including resource allocations
- Communicate with our members about what is important to SIOP
- Align committee, subcommittee, and working group initiatives and actions with SIOP priorities
“Things are changing faster than ever before, but this also brings opportunities that our field and our Society cannot afford to wait on,” said SIOP President Richard Landers. “For I-O psychology to thrive, both internally and in the broader world of work, we must focus now and act with intent. These new priorities will enable us to do exactly that.”
More information will be shared about each of these priorities in a series of Source articles beginning next week and continuing into August. More information is also available on the Strategic Goals webpage. Please familiarize yourself with these priorities and follow along in the coming months as we share specific progress made in each of these areas.
Historically, one of SIOP’s greatest strengths has been member engagement and involvement. Each year, more than 1,000 SIOP members contribute to our shared success by participating on committees, volunteering as mentors and reviewers, presenting at conferences, and so forth. Your involvement in developing these strategic priorities was equally invaluable. Thank you for helping shape SIOP’s future and ensuring SIOP’s continued success.
