How to WIN in the Workplace: Salary Negotiations

Creating a knowledge pool of experts, seasoned professionals, and peers who can provide sound advice in a meaningful and tangible way is an invaluable asset. This is what spurred the creation of the “How to WIN in the Workplace” online discussion series. The goal is to bring together panelists with varying backgrounds and experiences to speak on real workplace topics, questions, and problems. Attendees are encouraged to have real discussions in a true “Ask me anything” format around the topic for the session.

Hosted by the SIOP Women’s Inclusion Network (WIN), the kick-off of their online discussion sessions, How to WIN in the Workplace: Salary Negotiations, will be January 27th at 5 pm CST. We will explore the challenges and strategies of salary negotiation with Drs. Alexis Fink, Julie Olson-Buchanan, Kecia Thomas, and Nick Salter.  The four panelists provide both academic and applied insights around the topic of salary negotiations as well as unique experiences on the topic. The session will be conducted in an informal style, and you are encouraged to send in questions before the session or to ask during the session.

Panelist Bios


Alexis Fink

Alexis Fink has spent more than 2 decades leading Talent Analytics, Workforce Strategy, Talent Management, and large-scale organizational change teams at leading global organizations, including Facebook, Microsoft, and Intel.  She has done extensive work in organizational transformation, organizational culture, leadership assessment, and the application of advanced analytical methods to human capital problems. She is an author of a comprehensive book on People Analytics, Investing in People:  Financial Impact of Human Resource Initiatives, co-edited the forthcoming book on employee surveys, Employee Surveys and Sensing: Driving Organizational Culture and Performance, and has contributed numerous book chapters and articles through her career.  Alexis is a Fellow of SIOP, was recipient of SIOP's Distinguished Service Award in 2019, is an affiliated research scientist at USC’s Center for Effective Organizations and was chair of the IT Survey Group, an industry consortium dedicated to employee surveys. Alexis earned her PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at Old Dominion University. Alexis also serves as the Practice Editor for Industrial and Organizational Psychology: Perspectives on Science and Practice.



Kecia Thomas

Kecia M. Thomas is a professor of Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology and African-American Studies and the founding director of the Center for Research and Engagement in Diversity (RED) at the University of Georgia. Dr. Thomas currently serves as the senior associate dean in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at UGA.  Her portfolio includes all aspects of Faculty Affairs and serving as the divisional dean for the Social & Behavioral Science departments and institutes. Another major responsibility includes the leadership of the college’s diversity strategy and initiatives. She is also an elected Fellow of SIOP and APA.



Nick Salter

Nick Salter is an assistant professor of Industrial-Organizational Psychology at Hofstra University.  Previously, he was faculty at the Ramapo College of New Jersey for 10 years. As a scholar, Nick is interested in exploring issues of diversity and inclusion of all kinds in the workplace, including gender, race, sexual orientation, and intersectionality, among other topics.  In what ways do diverse populations experience the workplace differently? In what ways are their experiences similar to majority populations? He and his students regularly present at national conferences, such as SIOP and Academy of Management, as well as publish in various scholarly journals and academic books. Additional, he has been invited to speak to multiple organizations about diversity and inclusion issues.  Nick is also very active within the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), having served on many committees over the years, including the LGBT committee as the chair of the research team, the Education and Training committee, and (currently) the Getting I-O into Intro Textbooks (GIT) task force. Outside of work, Nick and his husband just welcomed their first child Mateo to the world last month!


Julie Olson-Buchanan

Dr. Olson-Buchanan is serving as interim dean at the Craig School of Business at California State University, Fresno, where she is a professor and previously served as department chair of Management for 10 years.  Her research interests include mistreatment in organizations, work-life balance, and humanitarian work psychology. A recipient of SIOP’s award for distinguished service, she is a former SIOP Program Chair, Conference Chair, and Conference Portfolio officer. She is currently the Main Representative and chair to the United Nations for SIOP and chair of Conference Site Selection. She was awarded Fellow status in the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) and the APA.  Dr. Olson-Buchanan has served as an AE for Journal of Business and Psychology since 2009. She is currently serving as chair of the Board of Directors for Central California Food Bank. She has received several awards for her research, community service, and the top teaching award from her university.
