Call for Papers on the COVID-19 Pandemic with a Rapid Review Process

The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally altered many aspects of work and nonwork life, with both short-term and likely long-term effects. There are many potential ways that the science of applied psychology can contribute to the public good and enhance our understanding of how COVID-19 has affected employees, leaders, teams, families, organizations as well as the communities in which these groups reside in. The faster that we can bring our scientific evidence to others, the more we can help.

The Journal of Applied Psychology ( invites quantitative and qualitative papers directly related to the pandemic. To be clear, the goal of this Call for Papers is to understand work- and employment-related phenomena associated with the COVID- 19 pandemic. Therefore, although data collected prior to COVID-19 could be used for comparison or linkage purposes, we are interested in research that directly informs our scientific understanding of the COVID-19 experience. To ensure relevance beyond COVID-19, we expect all submissions to discuss the implications of their findings beyond the current crisis in some manner.

As for all JAP manuscripts, we seek high-impact papers that enhance our conceptual and practical understanding of the experience of work. There are many topics that may be relevant to how COVID-19 has affected work. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Job loss, reduced work hours and employment insecurity
  • Financial consequences
  • Telecommuting and related changes in where we work
  • Demands on working parents and the work-nonwork interface
  • Career attitudes and experiences, including retirement
  • Technology and work
  • Virtual teams
  • Social distancing and work
  • Employee stress and well-being
  • Physical safety at work
  • Leadership and organizational responsiveness

Manuscripts cannot exceed 17 pages of text, excluding title page, abstract, references, tables and appendices. Each submission will first be screened to assure appropriate fit with the Journal’s mission, as well as fit to this call for papers on the COVID-19 pandemic. Manuscripts selected for further consideration will be assigned to an Associate Editor and 2 reviewers. We will strive to provide an initial editorial decision on submitted manuscripts within 15 business days of completed submission. If a revision is granted, we expect authors to revise manuscripts within 10 business days. Accepted articles will be posted online within a short time frame and also prioritized for publication.

Manuscripts will be considered as they are received, and this call continues until further notice. Authors should follow JAP’s Instructions for Authors and submit to the manuscript portal, selecting as article type “COVID-19.” You should also indicate clearly in your cover letter that your manuscript is related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
