How SIOP Members Help the Military and Veterans

What comes to mind when you think of psychologists working with members of the military or veterans?  Clinicians working with them on their mental health needs?  America’s Departments of Defense (DoD) and Veterans Affairs(VA) are the largest employers of psychologists in the world. According to the American Psychological Association, 7% of its membership - nearly 8,000 people -works for the DoD, and the VA counts 5,000 psychologists on its payroll. Although the majority are clinicians, a number of industrial and organizational psychologists (I-Os) work for the two agencies in a number of capacities to create programs, improve governmental organizations, and provide support to improve the lives of veterans.

It is no secret that the inclusion of women in the Armed Forces has been met with ambivalence––a warm welcome from some, hostility from others, skepticism on one side, and enthusiasm from another. Although women have served the United States since the Revolutionary War, their representation, especially in positions of leadership, has always been low.

My experience at SIOP's Leading Edge Consortium (LEC) on October 19-20 at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel was phenomenal. At the conference, I have the opportunity to hear applied psychologists and senior executives talk about identifying, developing, and retaining high-potential talent (HiPos). 

Bylaws Vote in December

The SIOP Executive Board recently voted to support a change in administrative procedures that are formalized in the SIOP Bylaws. Because any change to the Bylaws requires a full vote of the SIOP membership, the intended modification is described below.

Voting on the proposed bylaws change will begin on December 3, 2018, and conclude on January 1, 2019.

Linking Skills to Honor Our Military, Veterans, and Their Families

This week, in the United States, we celebrate Veterans Day, honoring those who volunteered to give up a civilian lifestyle to serve our nation and to keep us safe. At SIOP, we will honor these men and women by launching our inaugural #SIOPServingMilitary campaign on social media. We seek to achieve many goals:

1. Increase awareness of the needs of the military community seeking civilian employment and education in an inclusive manner. All members of a military family – service member, spouse, dependents – serve, face unique career challenges, and possess advantageous competencies and experience;
